Interesting Fact:  Christmas Island lies 1,300 miles south of Hawaii and was chosen as the base for Operation Grapple - the race to build Britain's first H-bomb.  Christmas Island is a non-self governing territory of Australia; administered from Canberra by the Australian Attorney-General's Department.
